How to Get to Baños#
Baños is reached primarily by road from Quito or nearby Ambato; the nearest major international airport is Quito (UIO), while Ambato serves regional flights. Expect to use interprovincial buses or private shuttles to reach the town.
Mariscal Sucre International Airport (UIO): From Quito, regular interprovincial buses depart Quitumbe terminal to Baños; journey time is about 3-4 hours. Public buses typically cost around USD 3-6; private shuttles and tourist transfers range ~USD 20-35 and take ~3 hours depending on traffic.
Ambato (Chachoán) Airport (ATF): Ambato is the closest commercial airfield for the region. From Ambato city centre buses and minibuses run to Baños in about 45-60 minutes for under USD 2; taxis cost roughly USD 10-15 and take about 45 minutes.
Train: There is no regular national passenger rail service to Baños. Occasional tourist trains operate on other Quito-Riobamba routes but do not provide a reliable connection to Baños; plan on bus or road transport instead.
Bus: Baños has a main terminal (Terminal Terrestre Baños). Frequent interprovincial buses leave Quitumbe (Quito) and Ambato for Baños: Quito-Baños ~3-4 hours (USD 3-6, several departures daily); Ambato-Baños ~45-60 minutes (under USD 2). Local colectivos/taxis serve shorter routes and nearby attractions.
How to Get Around Baños#
Baños is best reached by road; interprovincial buses and private shuttles from Quito or Ambato are the standard options. Once in town, short distances make walking and local colectivos the most practical ways to get around.
- Interprovincial bus (USD 2-6) - Frequent, very affordable buses connect Baños with Quito (Quitumbe terminal) and Ambato. Buses are economical, comfortable enough for the journey and the most common option for independent travellers. Bring a light jacket - the mountain roads can be cool and windy.
- Private shuttle / shared transfer (USD 20-35) - Tour operators and shuttle companies run shared or private transfers from Quito or the airport. These are faster than public buses, drop you at your hotel and cost more; useful if you arrive late or prefer door-to-door service.
- Taxi / remisse (USD 10-25) - Taxis and remisses are available from Ambato or local airports; useful for groups or if you need flexibility. Agree the fare in advance for intercity trips or use metered taxis within towns.
- Local buses & colectivos (USD 0.50-2) - Local minibuses and colectivos serve attractions around Baños (waterfalls, viewpoints). They’re the cheapest option but can be irregular - ask at your hotel for exact stops and times.
- Walking - Baños is compact and very walkable: most guesthouses, restaurants and main attractions (the cathedral, hot springs, riverfront) are within a short stroll. Expect steep streets in places and bring comfortable shoes.
