Balkan Mountains
Mountains Mountain range across Bulgaria, rich in biodiversity
The Balkan Mountains (Stara Planina) run across Bulgaria with high peaks like Botev, forested passes and long hiking routes; visitors come for trekking, mountain villages and seasonal shepherding landscapes.
The Balkan Mountains, known in Bulgarian as Stara Planina, are a major mountain chain that traverses central Bulgaria from the Serbian border to the Black Sea. The range extends roughly 560 kilometres and includes high peaks, passes and deep river valleys.
Significant features include high summits such as Botev Peak at 2,376 metres, alpine meadows, dense forests and steep gorges. The mountains contain well-known passes like Shipka Pass and are a destination for hiking, mountaineering and nature tourism.
Historically the Stara Planina has been a natural barrier and a theatre for military actions; passes such as Shipka are associated with the 19th-century Russo-Turkish War of 1877-1878. Over time the range has been managed for forestry, pastoral use and, in more recent decades, conservation.
The range crosses central Bulgaria and forms a climatic and geographic divide between northern and southern Bulgaria, with access points from towns and cities across the country.
- Length and orientation: The range runs roughly east-west across central Bulgaria for about 560 kilometres from the Serbian border to the Black Sea.
- Highest point: Botev Peak reaches 2,376 metres and is the highest point of the Balkan Mountains chain in Bulgaria.
What to See #
- Botev Peak: Botev Peak, the highest summit of the range at 2,376 metres, is a focal point for hikers and mountain routes in the central section.
- Shipka Pass: Shipka Pass with its historical memorials and monuments marks a key east-west passage and is associated with 19th-century Russo-Turkish War battles.
- Central Balkan National Park: Central Balkan National Park protects large central sections of the range, conserving forests, alpine meadows and endemic flora and fauna.
Tips for Visiting Balkan Mountains #
- Start hikes early in the day, especially in summer, to avoid afternoon heat and to enjoy quieter trails; weekdays are noticeably less busy than weekends on popular passes.
- If you can, focus on routes within Central Balkan National Park (well-signposted trails and visitor centres) rather than attempting long, remote sections without a local guide-park trails lead to waterfalls and scenic ridges that many visitors miss.
- Include a visit to Shipka Pass and surrounding memorial sites if you're in the central range-these are accessible by road and offer panoramic views and historical context without committing to long treks.
Best Time to Visit Balkan Mountains #
For hiking and clear trails, visit the Balkan Mountains in summer (June-September); shoulder seasons are quieter but more changeable.
