Bakhtegan Lake

Bakhtegan Lake is a saline lake in Fars province in southern Iran, east of Shiraz, historically one of the larger lakes on the Iranian plateau but seriously reduced in area in recent decades.

The site is notable for its exposed salt flats, remaining shallow pools and seasonal wetlands that at times attract waterbirds and create distinctive layered salt-and-mud landscapes. Photographers and naturalists visit for wide open views and to observe the changing shoreline rather than for a large permanent water body.

The lake is a natural basin fed historically by rivers from the surrounding mountains; reduced inflows from upstream irrigation and damming through the 20th and 21st centuries have caused progressive shrinkage and salinization. Those changes have transformed large parts of the lakebed into exposed flats and seasonal marsh.

Geographically it sits on the Fars plateau roughly 100 km east of Shiraz, within a semi-arid plain surrounded by low hills and agricultural land.
