The Babor Mountains are a mountain range in northern Algeria, forming part of the Tell Atlas and lying within Sétif Province. Peaks in the range reach roughly 1,800-2,000 metres, and the area is noted for its forested slopes and biodiversity.

The range is used for day hikes and multi-day treks to high summits, with forested trails and viewpoints above the tree line. The slopes support extensive cedar and mixed montane forests that are important for wildlife and plant diversity.

These mountains have long supported pastoralism and small rural settlements; forests have been used for timber and grazing over centuries. Conservation interest in the area has grown because of its remnant forests and populations of species that persist in northern Algerian highlands.

The Babor Mountains sit in the Tell Atlas of northeastern Algeria, within Sétif Province, roughly to the north of the city of Sétif. The range forms part of the transition from the coastal Tell hills to the interior plateaus.

  • Elevation: Peaks rise to roughly 1,800-2,000 metres, so expect alpine conditions near summits and cooler temperatures than surrounding lowlands.
  • Best times to visit: Spring and early summer bring wildflowers and clearer walking conditions; winter often brings snow at higher elevations.

What to See #

  • Djebel Babor (peak): The highest summit in the range, reaching about 2,000 metres, forming the local watershed and offering the main summit routes used by hikers.
  • Babor forests: Extensive mixed and cedar-dominated forests that cover much of the slopes and provide habitat for endemic and relict species.
