How to Get to Ayer Itam#
Ayer Itam is a suburb of George Town on Penang Island and is easiest to reach from Penang International Airport (PEN) by taxi or Grab, or by bus from George Town. The island’s Rapid Penang bus network covers most routes.
Penang International Airport (PEN): Penang’s airport in Bayan Lepas is the nearest airport to Ayer Itam (Penang Island). From PEN to Ayer Itam expect a 25-40 minute drive depending on traffic; a taxi or ride-hail (Grab) costs roughly MYR 35-60. There are also shuttle services and hotel transfers available.
Butterworth (PEN mainland access): Butterworth itself has ferry and rail connections but international flights arrive at PEN on Penang Island - plan onward travel by road or the ferry if approaching from the mainland.
Train: Penang does not have an island rail network. The nearest KTM rail station is Butterworth on the mainland; from Butterworth you cross to George Town by ferry or bus and then use island buses or taxis to Ayer Itam.
Bus: Rapid Penang operates multiple routes across the island; routes serving Ayer Itam include frequent services from George Town and other neighbourhoods.
