Bujang Valley
Archaeological Site Archaeological valley with early Malay Hindu-Buddhist ruins
An archaeological landscape in Kedah known for early temple mounds and settlements; Bujang Valley attracts researchers and visitors interested in Southeast Asia’s pre-Islamic history and museum displays.
Bujang Valley is an archaeological landscape in Kedah on the northwest coast of Peninsular Malaysia that contains remains of early medieval Hindu-Buddhist settlements and port activity. The area is significant for documenting South and Southeast Asian trading and religious contacts on the Malay Peninsula.
The valley contains numerous temple mounds, ruined brick structures and scattered artefact finds across a low coastal plain and river system. A small regional museum displays many of the excavated stone carvings and pottery from local digs. Surface remains are dispersed rather than concentrated in a single monumental complex.
Archaeological work in the area has documented periods of occupation from the early centuries of the Common Era through the later medieval period, with layers showing religious and commercial use. Excavations and surveys have been carried out intermittently by colonial and Malaysian teams to map and record temple mounds and artefacts.
The site sits in the Kuala Muda district of Kedah near the Merbok River on the northwest coast of Peninsular Malaysia. The landscape is a coastal river plain with low hills and agricultural land surrounding the dispersed archaeological features.
- Context: Located along the Merbok River floodplain, the site preserves traces of pre-Islamic Hindu-Buddhist activity and early maritime trade in the region.
What to See #
- Archaeological museum: Small on-site museum housing stone artifacts, pottery and interpretive displays from excavations in the valley.
- Candi remains: Clusters of ruined temple mounds and low brick foundations commonly known as candi, scattered across the valley and river plain.
