Austria in April: Weather, Crowds & What to Expect

Western Alps (Tyrol & Vorarlberg)

By early summer the high passes such as the Arlberg and the Fernpass are clearing and alpine hiking routes start to bloom; Großglockner Hochalpenstraße typically opens from late May and is a highlight for cyclists and drivers. Daytime temps in valley towns like Landeck and Imst reach the high teens to low 20s°C, but storms build in the afternoons over the peaks, bringing sudden showers and lightning. Pack rain layers, plan mountain days before noon, and expect the landscape to be lush and green.

Salzburgerland & Salzkammergut (Central Alps and lake district)

Late spring is a transition to green: meadows around Hallstatt and St. Wolfgang fill with flowers, and passes like the Lammertal open for touring cars. Salzburg begins filling with visitors as concert season prepares to ramp up, yet shoulder-season prices remain reasonable. Expect chilly mornings and warm afternoons suitable for sightseeing, and carry a light jacket for breezy lakeside boat rides.

Eastern Austria (Vienna, Lower Austria & Burgenland)

Late spring sees warmer, sunnier weather - days in Vienna often reach the high teens to low 20s°C and outdoor café life resumes in earnest. The countryside is ideal for bike touring and the first river cruises resume on the Danube; Burgenland’s lake baths like Neusiedler See are pleasant on warm afternoons. Shoulder-season rates make it a good window for tourists, though pollen-sensitive visitors should be prepared.

Southern Austria (Carinthia & Southern Styria)

By late spring, bathing at lakes such as Wörthersee starts to feel possible on warmer days and the hills around southern Styria bloom with orchards and vineyards.
