Western Alps (Tyrol & Vorarlberg)

The first thaw arrives gradually in many valleys - the valley floors of Innsbruck and Imst begin to show puddles, but high-altitude terrain like the Ötztal and Pitztal glaciers still hold firm. Spring skiing is popular in March and April at glacier areas, but lower resorts start to close; expect muddy village paths and slushy lifts near resort bases. Trekking routes below 1,500 m become accessible toward late spring, so carry waterproof boots and watch for late-season avalanche markers if venturing off pistes.

Salzburgerland & Salzkammergut (Central Alps and lake district)

The first genuine thaw lifts daytime temperatures in valley towns such as Bad Ischl and Gmunden, but snow lingers on alpine trails into April. Spring streams swell and waterfalls around the Dachstein regain power, making this a good month for lower-elevation hikes and the first boat trips on Wolfgangsee. Trails at higher elevations remain snowy and muddy; trekking boots and gaiters will be useful and some alpine huts stay closed until May.

Eastern Austria (Vienna, Lower Austria & Burgenland)

By springtime the vineyards of the Wachau and the rolling hills of Lower Austria begin to thaw and show early green; daytime temperatures climb into the high single digits to low teens. Cherry and apricot blossoms bring color to the countryside and Vienna’s parks bloom, making this a great time for cycling along the Danube. Rainfall can be frequent and sudden; carry a compact umbrella and layer for cool evenings.

Southern Austria (Carinthia & Southern Styria)

Spring brings an early greening compared with the high Alps - Wörthersee shores see early-warm days and St. Veit looks fresh with orchards leafing out. Waterfalls and rivers from snowmelt swell and hiking trails become muddy before drying; many lowland cycling routes are open for touring. Pack layered clothing for warm afternoons and chilly mornings, and expect lake swimming to still be too brisk until June.

Northern Uplands & Plateaus (Upper Austria, Mühlviertel, Waldviertel)

Spring is slow to arrive - the northern plateaus are often one of the last places to green up, and spring mud (Matsch) is common on forest trails in March and April. River valleys like the Danube near Linz clear first and make pleasant day hikes, while higher forest tracks continue to hold snow or deep mud. For visitors the season is quiet and economical, but come prepared for wet shoes and slow trail conditions.
