Atskuri Church
Monument Medieval Georgian church set within ruins and cliffs
A medieval church and fortress complex in Samtskhe-Javakheti, Georgia, perched above the Mtkvari valley; visited for stone architecture and panoramic river views.
Atskuri Church is a medieval Georgian Orthodox church and part of the Atskuri fortress complex set on a rocky outcrop above the Mtkvari (Kura) River in Samtskhe-Javakheti. The site comprises the ruined church and associated defensive structures and is notable for its elevated position overlooking the river valley.
The surviving fabric is medieval in date and the complex served both religious and defensive purposes in the Middle Ages; much of the structure is now in partial ruin. Visitors encounter stone masonry ruins sited on steep terrain rather than a fully restored building.
