Tmogvi is a ruined medieval fortress in southern Georgia’s Samtskhe-Javakheti region, positioned on a steep outcrop above a river valley. It is known for its cliff-top defensive position and remaining masonry walls.
The site is primarily visited for its ruined fortifications and the dramatic setting overlooking the valley and river below. Remnant walls and towers offer an impression of the fortress plan and defensive layout.
Built in the medieval period, the fortress served as a local stronghold and watchpoint on historic routes through the region. Over the centuries it fell into ruin, leaving the surviving masonry visible today.
Perched on a cliff above the valley of the Kura/Mtkvari river (regional river systems), Tmogvi sits within Samtskhe-Javakheti in southern Georgia and is reached via local roads from nearby towns in the region.
