Atarneus Archaeological Site

Atarneus is the archaeological remains of an ancient city in western Anatolia, in İzmir Province, which was occupied in classical and Hellenistic times and is associated with regional rulers of the 4th century BC.

Ruined defensive walls, an acropolis on a prominent hill and scattered funerary remains are the main visible features, and the site is valued for its archaeological remains and commanding views. Hikers and history visitors explore the hilltop ruins and the surrounding countryside for both scenery and antiquity.

Occupied in classical antiquity, the city became significant under Hellenistic rule and was governed in the 4th century BC by Hermias before later incorporation into Hellenistic and Roman spheres. Settlement declined in later periods, leaving the ruined remains visible today.

The hilltop site lies in İzmir Province near the Aegean coast, within the historic region of Aeolis and relatively close to the modern town of Dikili and the island of Lesbos across the sea.

• Go at first light to beat heat and to enjoy far-reaching views from the acropolis toward the Aegean and the island of Lesbos.
• Expect a short uphill walk from the nearest road; bring binoculars - the site's ruins, terraces and the surrounding coastline are best appreciated from the higher viewpoints.
• Take time to explore the hillside terraces and the theatre area rather than just photographing the entrance - the spread of ruins rewards a slow, clockwise path around the site.
