At-Turaif District in ad-Dir’iyah is a fortified historic district northwest of Riyadh that served as the original home and political centre of the Al Saud dynasty. The district contains an extensive ensemble of Najdi mud-brick palaces, houses and public buildings representative of central Arabian urban architecture.
The ruined and partly restored mud-brick buildings form a compact urban maze of narrow streets, courtyards and multilayered palaces; important elements include palace complexes and restored houses that convey domestic and administrative functions. On-site interpretation and a visitor route allow inspection of courtyard plans, towered facades and mud-brick construction techniques over distances typically under 1 km.
The district developed as the seat of the first Saudi polity in the 18th century and was associated with the alliance between the Al Saud family and religious reformers of that period. It was attacked and largely destroyed by Ottoman-Egyptian forces in 1818; since the 20th and 21st centuries the area has been the focus of archaeological study and restoration work to stabilise and present the mud-brick fabric.
At-Turaif sits on the northwestern outskirts of modern Riyadh in Saudi Arabia’s Riyadh Province, on the edge of the Wadi Hanifah valley. The district is immediately adjacent to the town of ad-Dir’iyah and is reachable by a short drive from central Riyadh.
- Historical significance: Became the original seat of the Al Saud family and the First Saudi State; it was largely destroyed in 1818 and is now subject to large-scale conservation and interpretation projects.
- Construction and viewing: Site fabric is traditional Najdi mud-brick architecture, best viewed in early morning or late afternoon when light reveals wall textures.
