Diriyah governorate
Area Historic district of Riyadh Province, UNESCO heritage area
West of Riyadh, Diriyah governorate includes the At‑Turaif district with mud‑brick Najdi architecture-the historic seat of the First Saudi State-and archaeological sites and restored palaces open to visitors.
Diriyah governorate sits on the northwest edge of Riyadh Province in central Saudi Arabia and contains the historic At-Turaif district, a key site in the early history of the Saudi state. The area is notable for its mud-brick Najdi architecture and its cultural significance as the original seat of the Al Saud family.
The main attraction is the At-Turaif historic district with its compact lanes and mud-brick palaces being conserved and opened as museum and cultural spaces. The precinct shows traditional Najdi construction techniques and urban form, and is presented alongside new visitor infrastructure in the Diriyah Gate development.
Diriyah became the centre of the First Saudi State in the 18th century following the alliance between Muhammad ibn Saud and the religious leader Muhammad ibn Abd al-Wahhab. The town was attacked and largely destroyed in 1818 during an Ottoman-Egyptian military campaign; subsequent centuries saw parts of the site fall into ruin until recent large-scale conservation and redevelopment efforts.
The governorate lies on the Najd plateau beside the Wadi Hanifa valley, about 20 kilometres northwest of central Riyadh. The site sits on the urban fringe of Riyadh and is accessed by road from the capital.
