Assab Travel Guide
City Port city in Eritrea on the Red Sea
Down on the Gulf of Aden, Assab is a working port with heat, salt flats and a scattering of fishing boats. Travelers come for raw coastal landscapes, seafood, and the odd ferry connection to neighboring shores.
Why Visit Assab? #
Trading routes and shipping lanes shaped Assab’s hard-edged port character and make it interesting for visitors who want an off-the-beaten-track Red Sea town. Scattered Italian-era buildings sit beside modern port facilities, and diving enthusiasts can explore nearby coral reefs and clear-water sites. Fresh seafood dominates the local cuisine, while small cafes serve the Eritrean coffee ceremony that anchors daily social life.
