Asmara: A Modernist African City

Asmara is the capital city of Eritrea and a recognized example of early 20th-century modernist urbanism in Africa, with a dense concentration of public, commercial and residential buildings in modernist styles. The city’s principal development phase dates to the Italian colonial period of the 1930s and 1940s.

Notable surviving buildings include the Cinema Impero and the Fiat Tagliero service station, among many apartment blocks, offices and civic buildings that display Rationalist, Futurist and Art Deco influences. The urban plan and streetscape preserve a broad ensemble of interrelated modernist designs.

Asmara expanded rapidly under Italian colonial administration in the early 20th century and especially in the 1930s, when extensive public and private building programmes produced much of the modernist fabric. Post-colonial continuity of use and relative preservation has left a coherent architectural ensemble.

The city sits on a high central plateau in Eritrea’s Central (Maekel) region, serving as the national capital and administrative centre.
