Arugam refers to the coastal town commonly known as Arugam Bay on the southeast coast of Sri Lanka in Eastern Province. It is widely recognized as one of the country’s principal surfing centers and a beachside tourism hub.
The shoreline offers multiple surf breaks of varying difficulty, beachside accommodations, restaurants and surf schools. The town functions as a service center for visitors and local fishers alike.
Historically it developed as a fishing village and expanded as surf tourism grew from the late 20th century, bringing guesthouses and tourism services to the area. Its growth has been tied to seasonal surf tourism and nearby natural attractions.
The town lies on Sri Lanka’s eastern seaboard near the town of Pottuvil and is adjacent to coastal wetlands and national parks such as Kumana and Lahugala, which are within driving distance.

How to Get to Arugam #
From Colombo, Arugam Bay is about 320-350 km east - by road it’s an 8-10 hour drive depending on traffic and route. The nearest major domestic airport is in Batticaloa (approx. 100 km north) or Ampara; from there, arrange a taxi or local bus. Local transport from nearby towns like Pottuvil is common.

- Arugam (usually referring to Arugam Bay) is best visited between April and October for surfing; storms and heavy rains occur during the northeast monsoon months.
- Secure transport in advance if arriving at night; the road network in Eastern Province can be rough.
- Respect local Muslim customs, especially during Ramadan - dress and public behavior are more conservative than in Colombo.
