Argentina makes stays of up to six months simple, either as a visitor with one extension or on its digital nomad visa. Longer-term residence is possible but needs a different category. This page covers the position as of October 2026. Immigration rules were overhauled in 2025, so check the official Migraciones site before applying.
Visa-Free Entry#
- Who: citizens of the US, Canada, the UK, EU countries, Australia and many others.
- Stay: 90 days.
- Extension (prórroga): one extension of 90 days, applied for online or at a Migraciones office before your stay ends, for a fee.
- Border runs: many people leave for Uruguay (a ferry from Buenos Aires to Colonia or Montevideo) and re-enter for a new 90 days. Officers can question frequent re-entries.
- Health insurance: since a 2025 decree, foreign visitors are expected to have health insurance for their stay.
Digital Nomad Visa#
- Who: remote workers employed by, or providing services to, companies outside Argentina, from countries that don’t need a tourist visa.
- Length: 180 days, extendable once by 180 days.
- Income: no fixed figure is published; in practice, show around $2,000 to $2,500 a month.
- How: apply online through Migraciones, with proof of remote work, income and health insurance.
- Status: since Decree 366/2025, it is a transitory, non-resident status. Time on it doesn’t count towards permanent residency.
Residency Routes#
For longer stays, Argentina offers temporary residency categories such as rentista (passive income), pensionado (retirees), work with an Argentine employer, and investment. After two years of temporary residency you can usually apply for permanent residency. These suit people settling down rather than nomads.
