Archaeological Sites of the Island of Meroe
Historical Site Nubian royal cemeteries and pyramids of ancient Kush
Looming pyramids and burial mounds mark the Island of Meroe, the Kushite kingdom’s necropolis on Sudan’s Nile bend. Visitors come for Nubian pyramids, archaeological trenches, inscribed stelae and the surrounding desert landscape.
The Archaeological Sites of the Island of Meroe are the remains of the Kushite kingdom’s royal cemeteries, temples and urban installations located on the Nile’s east bank in northern Sudan. The site is notable for its large numbers of steep-sided pyramids and Meroitic-period architecture.
The site’s most visible features are the pyramid fields with dozens of royal pyramids clustered on the desert edge, accompanied by small chapels and offering structures. Temple foundations, inscriptions and urban ruins document the administrative and ritual life of the Kushite state.
The area was a political and ritual centre of the Kingdom of Kush, with Meroe prominent from the first millennium BCE through the early centuries CE during the Meroitic period. The monuments reflect a sequence of royal burials and temple construction associated with Kushite pharaonic traditions and local innovations.
The archaeological zone lies on the east bank of the Nile in northern Sudan’s River Nile state, on and around the island/peninsula of Meroe, several hundred kilometres north of Khartoum. It occupies a desert margin landscape where the river meets archaeological cemetery and urban remains.
- Pyramid counts: The broader Kushite region contains more than 200 pyramids and tombs across several cemetery sites; Meroe is the largest and most visually prominent group in the area.
- Visiting tip: Pyramids and temples are best visited in cooler morning or late-afternoon hours, when sunlight enhances the steep angles and stone textures.
