Arbat Street is a historic pedestrian thoroughfare in central Moscow located in the Arbat district west of the Kremlin. It is one of the city’s best-known cultural streets and a longstanding commercial and artistic quarter.

The street’s core stretch is a pedestrian promenade of roughly 1.2 kilometres featuring souvenir shops, small galleries, cafes and frequent street performers. It remains popular for short visits, casual strolling and souvenir shopping.

Arbat has roots as a street outside the medieval Kremlin from the 15th century and later became associated with 19th-century writers, artists and a bohemian community. The modern pedestrian character dates from 20th-century urban developments and conservation of the historic facades.

The street sits in central Moscow a short distance west of Red Square and the Kremlin, served by multiple metro stations and surrounded by dense urban development.

Arbat Street (Ulitsa Arbat) is in central Moscow and is best reached by metro. Take the Arbatskaya station on the Arbatsko-Pokrovskaya (dark blue) line and exit toward Ulitsa Arbat - the pedestrian section is a 2-5 minute walk. Smolenskaya metro (near the western end) and Aleksandrovsky Sad/Teatralnaya stations are also within easy walking distance from different parts of the street.

By car it’s a short drive from the Kremlin (central Moscow) via Vozdvizhenka/Staraya Ploshchad/Arbat; expect only a few kilometres and limited parking in the immediate area, so public transport or walking from nearby metro stations is usually easiest.

• Enter Arbat from the Arbatskaya/Smolenskaya metro area in the morning on a weekday to see the historic facades and souvenir stalls before tourist crowds peak later in the day.
• Skip the busiest stretch around the central pedestrian spine and turn into the side lanes and courtyards where preserved 19th‑century houses, small memorial plaques and quieter cafés are concentrated-these are what many visitors miss.
• Visit late afternoon if you want to catch street performers and artists at their liveliest, but expect higher foot traffic then; to avoid the largest crowds, plan an early stroll or explore neighboring streets away from the main promenade.
