Aoudaghost
Ruins Ruined medieval Saharan city and former caravan hub
Aoudaghost is an archaeological site of a medieval Saharan trading town in present-day Mauritania. Scholars and adventurous visitors come for ruined structures, desert landscape and trans‑Saharan trade history.
Aoudaghost (Awdaghust) is the site of a medieval trans-Saharan trading town in present-day southeastern Mauritania that was prominent in West African and Sahara trade networks in the early second millennium CE.
Remains are primarily archaeological surface features and low mounds marking the footprint of the former settlement rather than large standing architecture. The site is of interest mainly to specialists and visitors studying medieval Sahelian trade routes and settlement patterns.
Aoudaghost was referenced in medieval Arabic sources as a major caravan and trading centre linking the Ghana Empire and Sahelian regions with North African routes; its prominence declined with shifts in trade routes and regional powers. The town’s period of greatest activity was in the first millennium and early second millennium CE.
Situated in the Hodh El Gharbi area of southeastern Mauritania, the site lies inland within the Sahelian zone and away from modern coastal centres.
- Historic role: Known from medieval Arabic sources as a major trans-Saharan trade entrepôt that handled gold, salt and caravan traffic between the Sahel and North Africa.
- Site condition: The archaeological site is mostly ruinous and consists of surface remains and scatters rather than large standing monuments; specialist study is required to visit some areas safely.
