Anıtkabir in Ankara is Mustafa Kemal Atatürk’s mausoleum and a national monument with a museum, monumental plaza and ceremonial architecture; visitors observe commemorative displays and city views from the hilltop complex.
Anıtkabir is the mausoleum of Mustafa Kemal Atatürk, founder and first president of the Republic of Turkey, located on Rasattepe hill in central Ankara. Construction began in 1944 and the monument was completed and opened in 1953.
The complex includes a long ceremonial approach, a broad plaza and the monumental Hall of Honor that houses Atatürk’s sarcophagus. The site also contains the Atatürk and Independence War Museum, landscaped Peace Park and multiple viewing terraces used for official commemorations and public visits.
Designed by architects Emin Onat and Orhan Arda, the site was planned and built in the 1940s and early 1950s as a national mausoleum and state monument. Since opening it has been the focus for state ceremonies, official wreath-laying and public remembrance.

How to Get to Anıtkabir #
Anıtkabir sits on Anıttepe in central Ankara. It is easily reached from Kızılay and other central neighbourhoods by city buses or taxi; pedestrian access from surrounding roads leads up to the monument. If arriving by air, Ankara Esenboğa Airport serves the city - from the airport you travel into central Ankara by shuttle, bus or taxi and then continue a short drive or local bus/taxi to Anıtkabir.
Tips for Visiting Anıtkabir #
- Go early in the morning to avoid peak visitor flow and to see the mausoleum and surrounding plaza in relative calm; large official visits can close parts of the site so check opening hours ahead.
- Photography is prohibited inside the Hall of Honor where Atatürk's sarcophagus lies, but you can photograph the exterior, the terrace views over Ankara, and the museum spaces in the complex-plan to visit the site museum beneath the mausoleum, which many visitors miss.
- Expect security checks at the entrance and allow time for them; the best approach is to enter via the main ceremonial avenue so you arrive at the terraces and museum in sequence.
