The Ethnography Museum of Ankara is a national museum in central Ankara dedicated to Turkish material culture and folk traditions. The building is an early Republican-era museum that holds extensive ethnographic collections.

Exhibits cover traditional costumes, textiles, household objects and ceremonial items that illustrate daily life and craft traditions across Anatolia. Display rooms are organised to present regional variations in dress, domestic equipment and ritual objects.

Constructed in the 1920s and opened as a museum in the early Republican period, the building is notable for having housed the provisional tomb of Mustafa Kemal Atatürk from 1938 until 1953 while Anıtkabir was under construction. The museum’s collections were assembled to document Turkey’s ethnographic heritage during the Republic’s formative decades.

The museum is located in central Ankara, in the historic Ulus area near other governmental and cultural institutions and within walking distance of the old citadel.

• Atatürk’s temporary resting place: The museum held the coffin of Mustafa Kemal Atatürk temporarily between 1938 and 1953 before his transfer to Anıtkabir.
• Collection focus: Collections concentrate on Turkish folk life, traditional costumes, textiles and household objects representative of Anatolian regional cultures.

From Ankara Station (Ankara Gar), take city bus or taxi - it’s about 2 km east into Ulus. Alternatively, via metro: get off at Ulus İstasyonu (M1) and walk northeast ~10-15 minutes along Atatürk Bulvarı toward the Anıtkabir complex.

• Visit early morning to see the sun catch the carved wooden chests and shadow the raised-metalwork of Ottoman garments - light makes the collection sing.
• Stand on the small terrace at the rear (near the mausoleum complex) to orient the museum within Ankara's old republican core; the view explains why the building was sited here.
• Don't skip the short exhibition on Mustafa Kemal Atatürk: the museum sheltered his casket from November 1938 until Anıtkabir opened in 1953, and the room still feels charged.
