Main image

Ankaratra is a volcanic mountain range in Madagascar’s central highlands, notable for its high peaks and cratered volcanic landscape, with summits rising above 2,600 metres.

The massif offers montane terrain, crater basins and small highland lakes, with trails used for hiking and pastoral grazing. Nearby thermal springs and the agricultural town of Antsirabe serve as common bases for exploring the area.

Formed by volcanic activity, the Ankaratra field shows Pleistocene-to-Holocene volcanic forms; human use has focused on grazing and on settlement in surrounding highland valleys. Geological activity is no longer characterized by frequent eruptions.

Located in Vakinankaratra region of central Madagascar, the range sits inland from the east coast and is close to the highland town of Antsirabe, south of the capital Antananarivo.

  • High points: The highest summits reach above 2,600 metres and are a major highland landmark south of Madagascar's capital region.
