The massif offers montane terrain, crater basins and small highland lakes, with trails used for hiking and pastoral grazing. Nearby thermal springs and the agricultural town of Antsirabe serve as common bases for exploring the area.
Formed by volcanic activity, the Ankaratra field shows Pleistocene-to-Holocene volcanic forms; human use has focused on grazing and on settlement in surrounding highland valleys. Geological activity is no longer characterized by frequent eruptions.
Located in Vakinankaratra region of central Madagascar, the range sits inland from the east coast and is close to the highland town of Antsirabe, south of the capital Antananarivo.

Ankaratra is 40-70 km south of Antananarivo depending on the access point. The road network is a mix of paved roads and rough tracks; public taxis-brousse run from Antananarivo to towns on the massif’s flanks, but hiring a car or joining an organized trek is recommended for flexibility.
