Andasibe-Mantadia National Park
Park Rainforest park home to indri lemurs and biodiversity
Andasibe‑Mantadia east of Antananarivo is humid rainforest known for Indri lemurs, endemic orchids and guided day and night trails. Wildlife viewing and short treks are the main draws.
Andasibe-Mantadia National Park is a pair of adjacent protected rainforest areas in eastern Madagascar’s Alaotra-Mangoro region, renowned for lemurs and high biodiversity. It is one of the country’s most accessible and visited rainforest parks.
Analamazaotra (Andasibe) offers short, well-marked circuits where the Indri indri is commonly heard and seen, while Mantadia provides longer hikes into less disturbed montane forest and waterfalls. Guided day and night walks highlight diurnal and nocturnal species, with trails ranging from short viewing loops to multi-hour treks.
The reserves were established to protect remaining montane and lowland rainforests and their endemic fauna, with conservation and research activities increasing since the late 20th century. Community-based tourism and research stations support both protection and visitor services.
Located east of Madagascar’s central highlands, the park lies within driving distance of Antananarivo and is accessed via the town of Andasibe (also known as Périnet) along the main eastward route.
- Indri viewing: One of Madagascar's best places to hear and see the Indri indri, the largest living lemur, often most active in the early morning.
- Access and guiding: Park access is via the village of Andasibe with short drives from the main road; guided walks are required in most zones.
What to See #
- Analamazaotra (Andasibe) Reserve: Analamazaotra (commonly called Andasibe) Special Reserve where Indri indri populations are most reliably observed on short guided walks.
- Mantadia National Park: Mantadia National Park, a larger, more rugged block of montane rainforest with longer trails, waterfalls and remote wildlife habitats.
- Community and night trails: Local community-run trails and night-walk routes around Andasibe village used to view nocturnal species such as mouse lemurs and frogs.
