Anadoluhisarı
Museum Medieval fortress on the Bosphorus shore in Istanbul
A medieval fortress on the Anatolian shore of the Bosphorus, Anadoluhisarı dates to the late 14th century. Tourists visit for the compact stone keep, close-up Bosphorus views and nearby waterfront cafés on the Asian side of Istanbul.
Anadoluhisarı is a small medieval Ottoman fortress on the Asian shore of the Bosphorus in Istanbul, built to control and monitor Bosphorus traffic prior to the Ottoman conquest of Constantinople. It dates to the late 14th century and is one of the earliest surviving Ottoman fortifications on the strait.
The site consists of a fortified tower and adjoining curtain walls sited close to the water’s edge; its compact plan was intended to dominate the narrowest part of the Bosphorus. The fortress is a frequent photographic subject because of its riverside position and proximity to major ferry routes.
Construction of the fortress was carried out by the Ottomans in the decades before the 15th century to strengthen control over the Bosphorus and secure sea approaches to Constantinople. It later served defensive and signalling roles and has been repaired and conserved at various times.
Anadoluhisarı sits on the Asian (Anatolian) side of Istanbul on the Bosphorus, opposite the European shore fortifications, and is located within the city’s urban neighbourhoods with ferry connections and roads nearby.
- Viewing and access: Easily visible from Bosphorus ferries and seaside promenades, the fortress is accessible on foot from nearby neighbourhoods and makes for short photo stops along ferry routes.
What to See #
- Main keep and curtain walls: A compact stone fortress with a central fortified tower and surrounding curtain walls that controlled movement on the Bosphorus before the Ottoman conquest of Constantinople.
- Quay and riverside defences: Small defensive bastions and quay-side walls facing the Bosphorus; the fortress is sited directly on the Asian shore opposite the Rumeli side fortifications.
How to Get to Anadoluhisarı #
From central Istanbul, take a ferry to the Kanlıca or Anadolu Hisarı pier on the Asian side (ferries run from Eminönü and Üsküdar). From the pier it is a 10-25 minute walk along the shore, depending on the landing point; buses from Üsküdar and Beykoz also stop within a short walk.
Tips for Visiting Anadoluhisarı #
- Walk down from the road toward the tower at sunset when the Bosphorus light softens the fortress stones.
- Pair a visit with a tea in Kanlıca - the riverside neighborhood is famous for yoghurt and small tea gardens.
- The small site is best seen early; groups arriving by tour bus can make the courtyard feel crowded.
