Ambohimanga

Ambohimanga is a fortified royal hill and historic settlement in the Analamanga region of Madagascar, recognized for its cultural significance and traditional Merina architecture. It is listed as a UNESCO World Heritage site.

The site centers on a walled royal compound with timber and mud-brick buildings, ancestral tombs and consecrated natural features that together form a compact ceremonial and political complex. The layout includes defensive walls and gates, palace structures, and distinct burial enclosures that illustrate the social and spiritual organisation of the Merina kingdom.

Ambohimanga developed as the spiritual and political centre of Merina rulers and remained important through precolonial and early colonial periods. Over time the hill has been conserved as a historic site and continues to be used for traditional ceremonies and local cultural practices.

The hill sits in the highlands north of Madagascar’s capital in Analamanga region, on a wooded rise that overlooks surrounding farmland and villages. It is accessed from the Antananarivo area and functions as a nearby historic landmark to the capital.
