The Amana Colonies are a group of seven villages in east-central Iowa founded in 1855 by German religious Pietists who emigrated to the United States. The settlements operated a communal economy for much of their early history and retain a strong material and cultural legacy from that period.
Today the villages preserve historic buildings, craft workshops, communal kitchens, and museums; the colonies are visited for heritage tourism, traditional crafts, and food specialties. The communal economic system formally ended in 1932, after which the villages transitioned to private ownership while keeping many traditions and crafts alive.

How to Get to Amana Colonies #
The Amana Colonies are a cluster of villages in east-central Iowa. By car they are roughly 20-25 miles (about 30-40 km) from Cedar Rapids and about 20-30 miles from Iowa City (distances vary by route); the site is best reached by private vehicle via the nearby state and county roads, with parking available at the villages. Once there, the colonies are close together and easily explored on foot or by short local drives.
