Alexandria Eschate
Archaeological Site Ancient Hellenistic city founded by Alexander the Great
Founded by Alexander the Great at today’s Khujand, Alexandria Eschate marks the Hellenistic frontier; visitors examine citadel ruins and regional Silk Road museums in Sughd Region.
Alexandria Eschate, meaning ‘Farthest Alexandria,’ was founded by Alexander the Great in 329 BC on the Jaxartes River, in the area of the modern Sughd Region of Tajikistan. It served as the most easterly of Alexander’s urban foundations in Central Asia and functioned as a Hellenistic military and trading post.
Archaeological traces and later settlement history indicate continued occupation and shifting control through Hellenistic, Parthian, Sogdian and later periods, with the city’s importance waxing and waning under successive regional powers. The foundation marks a key point in the spread of Hellenistic culture into Central Asia.
The site lies near the modern city of Khujand in northern Tajikistan, on the fertile floodplain of the Syr Darya (Jaxartes), and is part of the ancient network of cities along that river corridor.
- Founding: Founded by Alexander the Great in 329 BC as one of his eastern outposts and located on the Jaxartes (Syr Darya) river frontier of Hellenistic Central Asia.
