Kayrakkum Reservoir

Kayrakkum Reservoir is a large artificial lake on the Syr Darya in Sughd Region, northern Tajikistan, created during the Soviet period to store water for irrigation and local use.

The reservoir forms an extensive inland waterbody that supports fisheries and attracts waterbirds, and is lined by villages and agricultural land.

It was formed by damming the Syr Darya in the mid-20th century as part of regional irrigation and water-management schemes.

The reservoir lies near the city of Khujand and is a prominent landscape feature in the Sughd lowlands.

• Wildlife and use: Important habitat for waterbirds and local fisheries; the reservoir is used for irrigation and recreational fishing by nearby communities.
• Nearest city: Closest major city is Khujand to the north; local roads and services are concentrated around towns on the reservoir’s shoreline.

• If you want birdwatching, go at dawn or dusk in spring or autumn when migratory species use the reservoir-bring binoculars and head to the north shore near Kayrakkum town for the best vantage points.
• Avoid busy weekends in summer if you prefer quiet beaches; many locals from Khujand use the reservoir on Saturdays and Sundays, so weekday visits are much less crowded.
• Watch local wind conditions: Kayrakkum can be breezy and is used for wind- and kite-sports on windy days-choose sheltered bays on calm days if you want gentler boat trips or shoreline walks.
