The Alexander Column is a monumental single-column structure located in Palace Square in central Saint Petersburg, Russia, erected in 1834. It commemorates the Russian victory over Napoleon and was designed by architect Auguste de Montferrand.

The column is a single monolithic shaft of red granite crowned with a bronze statue of an angel holding a cross; it stands on a high base surrounded by low balustrades and is a central visual element of the square. The monument was engineered and installed without additional attachments to the base, relying on its weight and precise fitting for stability.

Commissioned after the Patriotic War of 1812, the column was part of broader 19th-century efforts to memorialize military victories and shape the imperial urban landscape of St. Petersburg. It remains a focal point for visitors and official ceremonies in Palace Square.

The column is sited directly in front of the Winter Palace on Palace Square, in the historic centre of Saint Petersburg near the Neva River and the city’s main ceremonial axis.
