Alai Darwaza
Monument Iconic southern gateway of Delhi's Qutb complex
Built in 1311 at Delhi’s Qutb complex, the Alai Darwaza displays early Indo-Islamic arches, red sandstone and marble inlays; visitors study its architecture and the nearby Qutb Minar complex.
Alai Darwaza is a medieval gateway in the Qutb complex in the Mehrauli area of Delhi, India, built in 1311 during the reign of Sultan Alauddin Khalji. It is one of the prominent monuments within the larger Qutb Minar archaeological ensemble.
The structure is a single domed gateway executed in red sandstone with decorative inlay and carved inscriptions. Its dome and arched openings are cited as early uses of true dome construction and pointed arches in Indo-Islamic architecture, and it functions as an ornamental entrance rather than a large ceremonial hall.
Commissioned by Sultan Alauddin Khalji and completed in the early 14th century, it served as a southern gateway to the mosque and compound that form part of the Qutb complex. The gateway has been conserved as part of the protected archaeological site and is presented to visitors alongside the Qutb Minar and surrounding ruins.
Located in the Mehrauli neighbourhood of South Delhi, it sits within the walled grounds of the Qutb complex, a short walk from the Qutb Minar tower and other monuments. Access is via the complex’s visitor entrance and it is commonly seen on the standard circuit around the site.
- UNESCO listing: Included in the Qutb Minar archaeological complex, which is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
- Architecture: Built of red sandstone and noted for its use of true dome construction and pointed arches that influenced later Indo-Islamic architecture.
