Qutb Minar and its Monuments is a historic ensemble in the Mehrauli area of Delhi centred on the tall minaret known as the Qutb Minar, inscribed as a World Heritage site for its early Sultanate architecture. The complex includes a mosque, towers, gateways and other funerary and religious structures.

Construction of the Qutb Minar complex began in the late 12th century under Qutb-ud-din Aibak and continued under his successors, notably Iltutmish, with subsequent additions and repairs during the Delhi Sultanate period. The mosque was built using material taken from pre-existing temples and the site evolved with later medieval interventions and restorations.

The monuments are located in the Mehrauli neighbourhood of south-west Delhi within the larger Delhi metropolitan area, forming part of a larger archaeological landscape that includes later medieval and colonial-era features.

  • Minaret height: The Qutb Minar itself stands about 72.5 metres tall and is the most prominent monument within the Mehrauli archaeological area of Delhi.
  • Layered construction: The complex contains reused temple material and later Sultanate additions that together record architectural and political change from the late 12th to the 14th centuries.

What to See#

  • Qutb Minar: A tapering brick and sandstone tower rising to about 72.5 metres, built in stages beginning in the late 12th century as a victory monument for the early Delhi sultanate.
  • Quwwat-ul-Islam Mosque: A congregational mosque composed of spolia from earlier temples, forming one of the earliest large Muslim religious complexes in northern India.
  • Iron Pillar: A 7th-century iron pillar notable for its resistant surface against corrosion, standing within the mosque complex and measuring roughly 7.2 metres in height.
  • Alai Darwaza: An ornate gateway erected in the early 14th century that exemplifies Delhi Sultanate stonework and marks a principal entrance to the mosque precinct.
