Al Khor Island
Archaeological Site Island near Al Khor with mangroves and wildlife
Off Al Khor, the island and adjacent mangrove fringes host shorebirds and quiet coastal scenery. Day trips and small boat excursions bring birdwatchers and families from nearby beaches.
Al Khor Island is a small natural island in Al Khor Bay in the Al Khor municipality of Qatar, known locally as Purple Island for its coastal vegetation. It is notable for its mangrove fringe and coastal habitat within the bay.
The site features stands of mangrove trees and tidal mudflats that support wading birds and other coastal species, making it popular for short nature walks and birdwatching. The island is low and compact rather than large-scale, so visits are typically brief and focused on the shoreline and birdlife.
The island is a natural coastal formation that has long been part of local fishing and shoreline ecology rather than a constructed monument. Changes to the shoreline have been gradual and relate to coastal use and municipal amenity development in adjacent Al Khor.
The island sits in Al Khor Bay, adjacent to the town of Al Khor on Qatar’s northeastern coast, roughly 50 km north of central Doha. The surrounding landscape is flat coastal plain with mudflats and mangrove patches along the bay.
- Wildlife: Fringed by mangroves and shallow tidal flats that make it useful for short nature visits and birdwatching, especially in cooler months.
- Access: Located next to Al Khor town, making it easy to visit from the Al Khor Corniche.
