Akiyoshidai Quasi-National Park
Reservation Japanese plateau park with extensive karst limestone formations
Yamaguchi’s karst plateau Akiyoshidai and the Akiyoshido cave draw visitors for exposed limestone pavements, sinkholes and one of Japan’s largest show caves, plus cycling and meadow walks.
Akiyoshidai Quasi-National Park is a protected area in Yamaguchi Prefecture on Japan’s main island that centers on the Akiyoshidai karst plateau and the Akiyoshido cave system. The site is noted nationally for its limestone karst landscape and associated cave features.
The park offers wide open grassland scenery across the plateau, seasonal wildflowers and marked viewpoints over fields of limestone sinkholes and pinnacles. The Akiyoshido cave has developed visitor passages and is presented as a showcave alongside outdoor trails on the plateau.
Originally protected for its geological and scenic value, the park combines surface karst forms and subterranean limestone passages in a compact area popular with day visitors from nearby cities. It sits near the city of Mine in Yamaguchi Prefecture and is accessible by local roads.
- Karst and cave: The park combines an extensive karst plateau with a connected extensive limestone cave system that is developed for visitors.
What to See #
- Akiyoshidai plateau: A karst plateau characterized by dolines, limestone pinnacles and grassland; it is the most extensive karst upland on Honshu and a major open landscape feature of the park.
- Akiyoshido cave: A large limestone cave system beneath the plateau with developed visitor passages and showcave sections open to the public year-round.
