Usa Jingū is a major Shinto shrine in the city of Usa in Oita Prefecture on Japan’s Kyushu island, known historically as the head shrine of the Hachiman shrine network. The site dates from the early centuries of the classical period and holds a central place in the history of Hachiman worship.

The shrine complex includes the main worship buildings, subsidiary shrines, and a treasure house that contains ritual items and historic donations. From Ōita city, take the JR Nippō Main Line to Usa Station (journey about 40-60 minutes depending on service), then it is a 10-15 minute taxi or local bus ride to the shrine precincts.

• Approach Ushijima/Usa from the north gate early morning to watch shrine attendants prepare - the silence before the first worshipers arrives is striking.
• Photography of ritual is sensitive: avoid shooting priests performing rites without permission and follow posted rules inside inner precincts.
• Combine a visit with the nearby Usa Jingu Omotesando for traditional eateries and souvenir shops selling small talismans (omamori).
