Kokura Castle stands in the Kokura district of Kitakyushu in Fukuoka Prefecture and dates back to the early 17th century as a regional feudal stronghold. The present castle keep is a 20th-century reconstruction that functions as a museum and public park focal point.

Visitors see a multi-story reconstructed keep with exhibition rooms, the restored Honmaru residence and landscaped castle grounds including stone walls and a moat. Seasonal events and cherry blossoms in spring are common attractions in the park surrounding the castle.

The original castle complex was established in the early Edo period for a ruling samurai family and passed through different domains over subsequent centuries; the historic buildings suffered damage and parts were rebuilt in the modern era.

The castle sits in central Kokura, within Kitakyushu city, a short distance from JR Kokura Station and the urban core; the site is integrated into an urban park and cultural precinct.

Kokura Castle sits in Kokura Park in Kitakyushu city and is easy to reach from Kokura Station. Take JR (including the Sanyō Shinkansen and Kagoshima Main Line) to Kokura Station, exit toward the city/park area and walk roughly 10-15 minutes to the castle grounds. Local buses and taxis also serve the station-castle corridor for a short onward ride.

• Approach Kokura Castle on foot from JR Kokura Station (about a 10-15 minute walk) - taking this route gets you through the surrounding riverside parks and places you at the castle's main entrance.
• Visit on weekday mornings or early afternoons to avoid school groups and weekend crowds; the castle keep's museum and rooftop view are most pleasant before late afternoon.
• Pair the castle visit with a stroll through the adjoining castle gardens and nearby Riverwalk shopping/restaurant area to experience both the historic site and modern Kitakyushu amenities in one outing.
