The Ailao Mountains in southern Yunnan contain subtropical forests, tea terraces and Yi and Hani villages; trekking routes, nature reserves and local tea roads attract outdoor travellers.
The Ailao Mountains (Ailao Shan) are a north-south trending mountain range in Yunnan province, China, forming part of the highland backbone of central Yunnan. The range is notable for its montane forests and ecological diversity.
Slopes are covered by subtropical and temperate montane forest types, with cloud forests at higher elevations and a range of endemic flora and fauna. The area is used for scientific research and conservation and includes forested reserves and walking routes in places.
The mountains have long formed a natural ecological boundary within Yunnan and have been the focus of regional conservation efforts in the 20th and 21st centuries. Traditional local communities have used the slopes for agriculture and forest products.
Ailao Shan runs through central-southern Yunnan province; the range lies inland from the Red River and Mekong valleys and is part of Yunnan’s highland terrain. It is southwest of Kunming within the province.

How to Get to Ailao Mountains #
The easiest regional hub is Kunming; from there the Ailao ranges are reached by highway and provincial roads (several hours’ drive depending on the target county). County towns nearest the major protected forest tracts are reachable by regional bus services; from those towns hire local taxis or drivers to reach trailheads and villages.
Tips for Visiting Ailao Mountains #
- Travel with a local driver familiar with mountain roads; signage is sparse and GPS may misroute on secondary roads.
- Plan hikes in daylight - many trails cross cloud forest and bamboo where visibility drops in fog.
- Visit Hani and Yi villages for terrace agriculture and tea culture; ask for permission before photographing people or houses.
