Dian Lake Lake

Dian Lake, also known as Dianchi, is a large freshwater lake in Yunnan province in southwest China, situated near the provincial capital, Kunming. It is the largest lake in Yunnan and an important regional water body.

The lake supports fishing, lakeside parks and local tourism while also facing environmental pressures that have prompted restoration and water-quality projects in recent decades. It is a prominent geographic and ecological feature of the Kunming basin.

Dian Lake lies on the Yunnan Plateau near Kunming and forms part of the surrounding lowland landscape; the city of Kunming sits on the lake’s northern and northeastern shores.

Dianchi (Dian Lake) lies on the southwestern edge of Kunming, Yunnan. From Kunming city centre you can drive to the lake’s north shore (Haigeng Park and other lakeside areas) - depending on your exact start point this is typically a 10-20 km drive and takes around 20-40 minutes by car. Local city buses and taxis serve the lakeside parks from Kunming; walking distances vary by which lakeside park or pier you choose.

• Go at first light on a clear day for the best views across the lake and toward the Western Hills; midday often brings haze and reduced visibility.
• Approach the lake from Kunming's south shore parks (Haigeng Park is the main recreational gateway) if you want boat access or lakeside promenades.
• Avoid weekends and national holidays when local crowds concentrate along the shore; weekdays offer far more peaceful birdwatching and shoreline scenery.
