How to Get to Ahuachapán
Ahuachapán is reached overland from San Salvador after arriving at El Salvador International Airport (SAL). There is no passenger rail service; intercity buses and private shuttles connect the city with the capital.
El Salvador International Airport (SAL): Mons. Óscar Arnulfo Romero y Galdámez International Airport (SAL) near San Luis Talpa is the principal international gateway. From SAL you usually transfer to San Salvador by taxi or airport shuttle (≈30-45 minutes, taxis ≈US$25-40), then take an intercity bus or shuttle to Ahuachapán.
No local commercial airport: Ahuachapán does not have scheduled commercial flights; overland travel from San Salvador is the normal approach.
Train: El Salvador has no regular nationwide passenger rail service in current operation; passenger rail travel is not a practical option.
Bus: Intercity buses run from San Salvador to Ahuachapán. Buses depart from San Salvador’s western bus stations (commonly referred to as the western terminals) and the journey typically takes about 3-4 hours depending on service and traffic; fares are low (roughly US$2-6). Private shuttles are faster but cost more.

Ahuachapán’s central area is reasonably walkable for short trips around the plaza and markets. Public transportation relies on local buses and shared minibuses (rutas); taxis and motorcycle taxis operate for short rides.
