Agua Fria National Monument is a protected area in central Arizona established to conserve a desert landscape and a large number of prehistoric and historic archaeological sites. It is managed by the U.S. Bureau of Land Management.

The monument contains hundreds to thousands of archaeological sites-house sites, pueblo-period ruins, petroglyph panels and low-walled pit structures-scattered across desert badlands, mesas and river terraces. Short trails and interpretive stops provide access to several well-known ruin sites and rock-art panels; much of the monument remains backcountry open to primitive travel.

The area preserves human occupation dating from prehistoric times through the historic period; many of the sites visible today date to Puebloan and Hohokam-era occupations and were documented during archaeological surveys in the late 20th century. Federal designation was made to protect these sites from development and looting.

The monument lies north of the Phoenix metropolitan area in central Arizona, within a day’s drive from the city and accessible from highways that run through the surrounding desert and canyon country.

  • Archaeological protection: The monument was designated to protect extensive prehistoric and historic archaeological sites, including cliff dwellings and petroglyphs, and is managed by the Bureau of Land Management.
  • Visiting conditions: Best visited in the cooler months; some interior roads are unpaved and may require high-clearance or four-wheel-drive vehicles after rain.
