Aghmat is a ruined medieval town near Marrakech in Morocco that served as a regional Berber centre in the early Islamic period. The site is notable for its archaeological remains of a once-thriving settlement.
Remains include stretches of city walls, foundations of houses and public buildings, and scattered artefacts from medieval occupation. The site is low-rise and open; there are no large standing monuments but archaeological features are visible across the site.
Aghmat was occupied and developed by local Berber communities and served as an important local centre until it was eclipsed by the rise of nearby Marrakech in the 12th century. Over time the town declined and was abandoned, leaving the ruins visible today.
The site sits in the foothills southeast of Marrakech in the Marrakesh-Safi region, on a plain below the High Atlas. It is reached by rural roads from Marrakech and nearby towns.
