Abydos, Egypt

Abydos is an important ancient Egyptian cult center and archaeological site in Upper Egypt associated with royal burials and the worship of Osiris, with major temple remains dating especially to the New Kingdom.

Principal attractions include the Temple of Seti I with well-preserved reliefs and the famous Abydos King List, and the nearby royal necropolis area of Umm el-Qa’ab containing early dynastic tombs. The site is valued for its continuity of religious significance from the Predynastic period through the New Kingdom.

Abydos was a sacred center for the cult of Osiris and a burial place for early dynastic rulers; the Temple of Seti I (late 14th century BCE) and later additions by Ramesses II are among the best-preserved monuments.
