Abuna Yemata Guh

Abuna Yemata Guh is a rock-hewn Ethiopian Orthodox church set on a sheer cliff face in the Gheralta massif of Tigray, northern Ethiopia. It is noted for its dramatic perch and for painted interior decorations preserved in the sheltered sanctuary.

The route to the church involves a steep and exposed scramble along narrow ledges and fixed supports before reaching the small rock-cut entrance. Inside the single-chamber sanctuary visitors find vividly painted wall and ceiling murals and a carved wooden pulpit used for services.

The site is part of the long tradition of monastic and rock-hewn churches in Tigray and has been used as a place of worship since the medieval period. Its location and construction reflect continuity of Orthodox Christian practice in the highlands and the local tradition of cliff-top chapels.

The church is located in the Gheralta escarpment of Tigray Region, northern Ethiopia, among steep sandstone outcrops and remote highland terrain. The nearest sizable towns are in the wider Tigray plateau; access typically requires travel on rural roads followed by a guided walk to the site.
