Abu Simbel
Ruins Rock-cut temples built by Ramses II in southern Egypt
Two massive rock‑cut temples at Abu Simbel were relocated in the 1960s to avoid Lake Nasser; tourists travel from Aswan to see Ramses II’s colossal statues and the twice‑yearly solar alignment in the inner sanctuary.
Abu Simbel is a pair of rock-cut temples in southern Egypt built by Ramesses II in the 13th century BCE and famous for their monumental scale and facade statues. The site was moved in its entirety in the 1960s to prevent inundation by Lake Nasser following construction of the Aswan High Dam.
The larger temple’s facade is dominated by four seated colossi of Ramesses II, each about 20 meters high, while the smaller temple is dedicated to Queen Nefertari and the goddess Hathor. Visitors tour the interior halls with decorated reliefs and the rebuilt temple complex set above the modern lake level.
The temples were carved during Ramesses II’s reign around 1264 to 1244 BCE and served both religious and political purposes, projecting royal power on Egypt’s southern frontier. The mid-20th century international relocation project preserved the monuments and reconstructed them on an artificial hill above the original site.
Abu Simbel sits on the western shore of Lake Nasser in southern Egypt, near the border with Sudan and several hundred kilometers southwest of Aswan; it is commonly visited as a long-distance day trip by road or by air from Aswan.
- 1950s-1960s relocation: The temples were relocated in 1964-1968 to protect them from rising waters of Lake Nasser after construction of the Aswan High Dam; they were cut into large blocks and reassembled on higher ground.
- Solar alignment: Twice yearly the temple's interior light aligns with the statues to illuminate the central figures - a solar phenomenon timed around the pharaoh's birthday and coronation dates.
What to See #
- Great Temple of Ramesses II: The Great Temple primarily honors Ramesses II and features four seated colossi at the facade each about 20 meters tall, flanking the entrance.
- Small Temple of Nefertari: A smaller temple dedicated to Queen Nefertari and the goddess Hathor, located beside the larger temple and aligned to receive similar solar effects.
How to Get to Abu Simbel #
Abu Simbel is on Egypt’s far southern border in Aswan Governorate. From Aswan it is approximately 280-300 km south by road; the drive typically takes about 3.5-4 hours by car or tourist coach along the desert highway, and many visitors travel on organized day tours. There are also occasional domestic flights from Aswan to Abu Simbel airstrip during the tourist season; on arrival at Abu Simbel town the temples are a short drive from the airstrip.
Tips for Visiting Abu Simbel #
- Visit at first light or late afternoon to avoid the peak cruise-ship crowds that arrive mid-day from Aswan; early slots give quieter interiors and better photo light on the colossal facade.
- Allow time for both temples - the smaller Temple of Hathor (Nefertari) next to Ramses II's temple is often overlooked but has finely preserved reliefs and a different scale and mood.
- If your schedule is tight, consider a short flight between Aswan and Abu Simbel rather than the road transfer - flights cut travel time and reduce the chance of being caught in coach-group timing.
