Abu Rawash
Administrative Seat Archaeological site near Giza with ruined pyramid remains
Abu Rawash, near Giza, holds the ruined pyramid attributed to Pharaoh Djedefre and scattered necropolis remains; visitors arrive from Cairo to study offbeat archaeological ruins away from the main Giza plateau.
Abu Rawash is an archaeological necropolis on the northern edge of the Giza plateau in Egypt, best known for the heavily ruined pyramid complex attributed to Pharaoh Djedefre. The site represents the northernmost of the major Old Kingdom pyramid sites associated with the Giza area.
Visitors see the remains of a ruined pyramid and associated stonework and rubble on a desert plateau; large portions of the original structure have been dismantled and much of the monument survives now as collapsed masonry. The site is primarily of interest to archaeologists and visitors focused on Egypt’s pyramid-building history rather than mass-tourism visits.
The pyramid at Abu Rawash is usually attributed to Djedefre of the Fourth Dynasty and was constructed in the Old Kingdom period; subsequent stone robbing and collapse left only foundations and debris. The site has been the subject of archaeological study and surveys of the surrounding necropolis.
Situated north of the Giza pyramids in Giza Governorate, Abu Rawash lies on the desert plateau close to Cairo and is reachable by road from the capital.
- State of preservation: The site is a ruined royal necropolis on the Giza plateau's northern periphery, notable for the very poor state of preservation of the main pyramid.
- Access: Located just north of the main Giza pyramids, the site is accessible by road from Giza and Cairo though it is not developed as a major tourist circuit.
What to See #
- Pyramid of Djedefre: The heavily ruined pyramid complex attributed to Pharaoh Djedefre, now largely dismantled with only foundational and rubble remains visible on the necropolis site.
How to Get to Abu Rawash #
Abu Rawash (the archaeological site northwest of Giza/Cairo) is best reached by car or taxi from Cairo/Giza - it lies approximately northwest of central Cairo and Giza and is typically a 30-60 minute drive depending on traffic. Follow the Cairo-Alexandria desert road or local Giza roads toward the Abu Rawash area; there are no regular tourist bus lines directly to the ruins, so private car, taxi, or a booked tour is the most reliable option.
Tips for Visiting Abu Rawash #
- Go early in the morning and hire a local guide or join an organized trip from Giza-Abu Rawash is north of the Giza Plateau, has limited facilities, and its site access can be inconsistent.
- Check opening status and permit requirements before you go: the Djedefre pyramid area has had restricted access at times and there are no extensive visitor services, so guided transport avoids wasted journeys.
- Most visitors pass through without examining the surrounding quarries and valley remains; a local guide will point out the visible remnants of the ancient complex and the best viewpoints for photography.
