Abu Mena

Abu Mena is a late antique and early medieval Christian pilgrimage center near Alexandria, Egypt, founded in the 4th century around the shrine of the martyr Saint Menas and now an archaeological site and UNESCO World Heritage site.

The site preserves the plan of a large basilica complex, baptistery and visitor accommodations that testify to organized pilgrimage and healing cultic activity; much of the site subsided due to rising groundwater and salt damage after the medieval period. Visitors see foundations, mosaics and excavated church precincts rather than standing buildings.

Established in the 4th century following the martyrdom of Menas, the complex grew into one of the leading pilgrimage centers in Egypt through the Byzantine and early Islamic periods. Over time environmental changes and abandonment led to the ruinous state, with archaeological work in the 20th century exposing its layout and finds.

Abu Mena is located inland from Alexandria in Alexandria Governorate, roughly 40-50 km southwest of Alexandria near the modern town cluster of Abu Mena.
