Abd al Kuri Island

Abd al Kuri is one of the islands of the Socotra Archipelago, administratively in Yemen’s Socotra Governorate, noted for its remoteness and marine biodiversity. It is smaller and less visited than the main island Socotra.

There are no major tourist facilities; visitors can expect small coastal settlements, rugged terrain and opportunities for observing seabird colonies and coastal marine life. The island’s isolation means visits are mainly by private boat or specific expedition services.

Abd al Kuri shares the archipelago’s long maritime history and has been used for local fishing and small-scale pastoralism; it has had limited development compared with larger regional islands. Traditional lifestyles and marine resource use continue to shape island life.

Located southwest of the main island Socotra in the northwestern Indian Ocean, Abd al Kuri lies off the Horn of Africa and is administered from Socotra.

• Remoteness and settlements: Part of the Socotra Archipelago, the island is remote with limited transport links and small, traditional settlements.

Abd al Kuri is part of the Socotra archipelago and is not served by regular commercial flights. Access is by sea from Socotra Island (Hadibu or other local ports) - visitors must arrange a boat transfer or join a private/chartered expedition from Socotra, as there are no regular public ferry services from mainland Yemen.

• Access to Abd al Kuri is extremely limited and there are no regular tourist services; plan only as part of an organized scientific or specialist expedition and expect to travel by boat from Socotra with local permission.
• Do not attempt independent travel: there are few (if any) visitor facilities, no reliable transport schedules, and access requires coordination with local authorities or operators familiar with Socotra‑region logistics; many ordinary tourist routes do not reach this island.
