Wat Phra That Doi Kong Mu is a hilltop temple complex overlooking Mae Hong Son town, characterized by its prominent Burmese-style chedis and viewpoint terraces.

The complex’s two main chedis and associated shrines occupy a wooded hill above the town; steps and a terrace area provide wide views of Mae Hong Son’s valley and surrounding mountains. The site functions as both an active religious shrine and a readily accessible scenic overlook.

The temple sits on a hill a short drive from Mae Hong Son town center and is commonly visited by residents and tourists for both its religious features and valley views.

What to See#

• Hilltop chedis: Two large whitewashed chedis built in a Burmese-influenced style sit on the hilltop and form the complex’s most visible structures, visible from across the Mae Hong Son valley.
• Viewpoint terrace: A terrace and stairway around the shrine provide panoramic views over Mae Hong Son town and the surrounding mountains, a common vantage point for sunset and landscape photography.

Wat Phra That Doi Kong Mu sits on a hill just above Mae Hong Son town. From the town centre it’s a short drive (about 5-10 minutes, roughly 1.5-2 km) up the hill road; local songthaews, tuk‑tuks or taxis can take you to the temple entrance. If you prefer to walk, the climb from the central market/clock tower area is steep and typically takes 20-30 minutes.

• Visit in the hour before sunset for the best panoramic light over Mae Hong Son valley; alternatively go at first light if you want mist and far fewer visitors.
• Take a motorbike, car or the local songthaew up the paved winding access road rather than walking from town - it saves time and gives you more time at the summit viewpoint.
• Don't stop at the main chedis only; follow the short paths around the hilltop to find quieter viewpoints, smaller Burmese‑style stupas and a large bronze bell that many visitors miss.
• Avoid Thai public-holidays and weekend afternoons; weekdays early morning or late afternoon are the least crowded times to enjoy the temple and views.

Constructed in 1860, this is one of Mae Hong Son’s oldest temples. Its most striking feature is a pair of whitewashed chedi, the second of which was erected by the first governor of Mae Hong Son, Phraya Singhanatracha.

The Burmese-style temple dominates the landscape from the top of Doi Kong Mu, and can be reached by motorcycle or car, or via a long and steep staircase for those who prefer to walk. The main temple buildings are impressive in themselves, but if you still have energy there is a bot (ordination hall) even further up the hill, from where the views open out to the west towards Burma. The best time to make the climb is early in the morning or at the end of the day, as ascending in full sun is a hot and uncomfortable experience.
