Zvartnots, Armenia

Zvartnots is the archaeological site of a 7th-century cathedral complex in Armavir Province, Armenia, noted for its distinctive circular-plan cathedral and early medieval architecture. The cathedral is one of Armenia’s most important early Christian monuments and is included in the UNESCO World Heritage inscription alongside Etchmiadzin Cathedral.

Visitors see the stone ruins of the central cathedral with its surviving column bases, capitals and carved stone fragments set within an archaeological park. Interpretive signage and excavated foundations outline the original plan and the scale of the complex.

The cathedral was built in the mid-7th century under Catholicos Nerses III (Nerses the Builder) and represented an innovative architectural design for the period; it collapsed after an earthquake sometime in the 10th century and subsequently fell into ruin.

The site lies in Armavir Province, a short drive west of Yerevan and close to the Zvartnots International Airport, set on a plain that was the location of medieval ecclesiastical construction.
