Zomba Plateau is an upland plateau in southern Malawi, located next to the town of Zomba and within Malawi’s Southern Region. The plateau rises to about 2,087 meters above sea level and is a prominent local landmark.

The plateau offers a network of walking trails, rocky viewpoints and short excursions such as the well-known Likhubula Falls. Much of the area is covered by montane forest and grassland and is used for day hikes, birdwatching and scenic drives rather than long-distance trekking.

Historically the plateau has long been used by local communities and was developed as a hill retreat and forestry area during the colonial era; parts of the upland are managed as forest reserve. Its land use today combines conservation, recreation and small-scale forestry.

Geographically the plateau sits immediately north of the town of Zomba in southern Malawi, forming a steep-sided upland above surrounding lowlands. The city of Blantyre is the nearest major urban centre in the region.

  • Highest point: Reaches approximately 2,087 meters above sea level, making it one of Malawi's higher upland areas.
  • Access: Sits immediately adjacent to the town of Zomba and is used for walking, short drives, and day hikes by residents and visitors.

What to See #

  • Likhubula Falls: A notable waterfall on the plateau's eastern slopes that is a common short excursion from Zomba town and nearby lodges.
  • Plateau summit: The plateau's highest area reaches about 2,087 meters above sea level and includes rocky outcrops and several informal viewpoints used by walkers.
